Chase Continues... - Written by Geoff Rauf

Well the weekend has gone again and things are getting increasingly frustrating even at this early stage in the season. For July the weather has been truly crap. I have been confident in my baits, in the rigs and everything seems to be going ok with bait placement, casting, and feature finding. The big issue and one thats echoed around the water is that people are just not catching at all. So far three fish have been landed which is bloody rubbish. There are a number of issues which i think could be causing this:

1) The harsh winter has stunted the weed growth meaning less naturals in place and the fish arent moving about as much in search of food
2) Lack of angling pressure means far less bait going in
3) Constant South Westerly wind pushing the fish out of bounds and completely out of reach

I’m sure one of the above is right but for now everyone is just toughing it out.

At least something is feeding!

These little critters are after your bait here

I thought id add a brief summary of where we are at so far this year. Try and show you exactly where ive been fishing, and where i cannot fish!

As per the attached map you can see the coloured X's marked in each area. These represent the three swims ive fished so far, and where (roughly) each rod has been placed.

NOTE: You will need to click on the map to view properly

The First weekend, which you may recall was a one nighter i fished the Cops swims (marked in Yellow). These provided me with an opportunity to fish in shallow water and into a bay while that south westerly was blowing.

On nights 2 and 3 of the second week we fished where the Red X's are indicated. This is a well known hot spot and offers a number of options to fish close to the sides of Bird Islands. These man made features offer the fish sanctuary, but also provide the chance of a take in relatively shallow water (to 4ft in places). I found the problem here was with the large pack of Coots who seem to enjoy decimating my baits at every opportunity. The fish are still showing here but are sticking to the insides of the Bird Islands - completely out of reach.

The final weekend just past for nights 4 and 5 i fished where the Green X's are marked. This is one of the hottest swims on the lake but at the moment the fish just arent hugging that far bank which is actually over 200 yrds across. Even trying close in resulted in no action. There are some excellent features here but still happened.

The Pink line illustrates the area where anglers cannot fish – this is out of bounds and believe me it means the task of catching is even harder – you can only actually fish 30% of the lake!

The last peg by the way is just over 1 mile from the carp park - hardly a brisk walk! Challenges eh...dont we just love em!
