Fine Tuning Rigs - Written by Geoff Rauf

Ever since i moved across onto my current water I knew the going would be tough. I had a good understadning of rigs, and kept everything simple. The Bait wasnt an issue and i have always tried to keep to one of two proven mixes. This year im now well into my 7th season on this club water and at the moment im just trying to fine tune everything.

Last year was the first time id really dabbled with chod rigs. This highly effective proven Carp Catcher allows for excellent presentation and you always know with a 'Choddy' you are fishing, no matter what surface you are in. this could be over Silweed, thick weed, or silt.

One of my pet hates is Flourocarbon. Its difficult to tie and although i first discovered its advantages back in 2000 in Whitvane ponds (devastating session), i still prefer to use coated braid for much of my fishing.

The advantages of Flourocarbon are obvious in that it allows the user to fish with stiffer hooklengths, with a near invisible link leading to your bait. For Chod rigs the use of Flourocarbon is a must and so over the past year ive been playing with various different lines, and the one i currently use is ESP Ghost in 16Ib bs.

For the majority of 2010 the main bulk of sucessfull anglers on the lake were using chods and its for this reason alone im going to stick with at least one - BUT ive been playing with the rig a bit (sounds wrong), and in testing it ive managed to bend the hooklink even further into a kinda semi circle - see attached for a better understanding of what im now fishing with.

We still need fish to be in the swim but as a wise famous carp angler once said, "find em, bait to em, and catch em" - now where are those fish!!!
