Its that time of the week once again that my mind switches from paper shuffling and office politics to a different kind of propaganda...the 'Lake le Doom'. This week im back into the mix after a refreshing day session last Saturday on a small pond which saw the Pubchucker Junior land his first carp, and then 4 others to 7Ib.
With my mind refocused on the big lake ive been preparing some Vitalin mixed with birdseed and crushed boilie. I’ve also been gearing myself up for more bankside politics (of which there are plenty). Why is it on any lake containing big fish you get a hardcore number of anglers intent on causing trouble?? Well, my lake is no different. The “he said this”, “she said that” never seems to stop. Anyway, back to the Vitalin. My mixture has been soaked, and soaked again with hot water, and now with 2 days to go this evening i will be moulding the mixture into golf sized balls. Left to dry these will be the perfect addition to my weekends baiting approach.
The wind and weather this week has stayed constant. South Westerly winds have once again prevailed and the temperatures have remained in the low 20s. My aim this week (apart from landing ten fish an hour – yeah right), will be to fish whats called the ‘Road bank’. The swims in this area offer deep margins and the opportunity to hit the man made bird islands at 160 yards. 160yrds I hear you say…he wont be hitting that. No, your right, i wont be, but hopefully with some new braid i might just get closer. All three spools on my Diawa 5500 Sportsmatics are being upgraded seeing as the Fireline (14Ib) is about 4 years old, and in major need of replacement. The spools have lost far too much line over the years and this im certain is effecting my casts.
I’ve tied up some fresh rigs, and after reading part of a book called ‘Bivvy Tramps’ i am having a little re-think on rigs..specifically the length of ones hooklength..ooh er. Chod rig aside, i think ive become far too obsessed with creating a kinda bolt rig effect using a very short hooklength of around 3 to 5inches. For a experiment (perhaps purely because nothing else is working )im going to set one of the rods with a much longer hooklength of 8-10 inches. So to summarise:
Rod one will be fished choddy style
Rod Two will use a short hooklength and single bottom bait tipped with rubber corn/maggot depending on how im feeling
Rod Three will be fished with a longer hooklength of at least 8Inches, snowman style
The Vitalin will be hammered over once rod close in. Once im in the swim i can then make a decision on the remainder of the baiting stategy
Another thought this week has also been in my head. Back-leads....
How many of us use them on a day to day basis? I bet a good number do. Have you ever thought about the resistance it takes for a Carp to drag a lead, and also a backlead for the ‘take’ to register on your alarms?? Its hard due tot he wildlife not fishing backleads but what about slack lines? Certainly more food for thought eh!
Signing off for now
