Fishing Into The Wind - Week 4

Written by Geoff Rauf

Well the BBC got it right as the weather this week has been a completely different story. Gone is the heat, along with the sun cream, T-shirts, and shorts, out come the jumpers, thermals and gloves – well maybe not that bad.

Anyway, the car park was relatively quiet this week (fair weather fisherman again). The wind was going to play a big factor in things this week. I always believe on big waters the fish do follow the prevailing warm winds. Westerly and south westerly are a favourite friend of most funny enough, and it’s for this reason most of the locals were down the far end of the lake fishing on the end of the wind.

I chose to fish a swim just past the ‘Island’ which gives the opportunity of hitting the plateau some 60 yards out. Once set up the first thing I did was get the Marker out there and locate the edge of the drop off. I wanted 2 baits on top of this plateau, and the third rod would be cast towards the back of the island –similar area to where id fished a few weeks previous.

By 9pm everything was set up, and the rods were all in position. Was this to be another blank for the Pub Chucker or would my 0 finally go!?

Although nothing was showing the wind had really picked up that Friday night and I wasn’t totally unconfident. I knew I had the baits in clear patches and id done the best I could. Id also spodded out 10 or 12 spods worth of trout pellet to both rods on the plateau. These pellets had been soaked in oils, and if found I know the fish would be drawn to the lake bed.

At around 8am I woke and put the kettle on. This was now blank number 7…yep 7 nights this season and no fish. I hoped night 8 would be different but first things first, this morning it was once again time for Saturday morning breakfast.

Good morning viewers and welcome to another episode of ‘cant catch wont catch’ with your host Mr Pub Chuck Blanker Rauf. I donned my chefs hat (camoflouge of course), and began the process….so here viewers you see me cracking two eggs (free range) into my stainless steel bowl (looks posh but got from poundland), and then using the fork whisk well, and add salt and pepper. Next chop 2 large mushrooms minding fingers, and add to the pan.

Fry on a low heat until cooked, then add your egg. Cook until cooked then serve on toast or rolls.

After completing my Saturday morning cooking and a few more cuppas later I was ready for catching fish..so….erm…I continued to stare at motionless rods, and thought it about time for a recast. All three were brought in and recast but this time just single gook baits and no freebies.

The day past by without any excitement except for a pike which decided to grab another of my finest pop ups. At this point I could swear but as per my note last week the younger generation could be reading this so I actually said ‘ whoops a daisy’ while untangling the mess left behind by Mr Pike.

Into Saturday night the session continued in usual pub chucking style yielding no results, no runs and ‘nil poi’ to yours truly. While action on this lake isn’t ever going to be wild there fish are hungry fish, and locating them is the biggest issue. I’ve chased them up and down this bank for the past 4 weeks now to no avail. I know my baits are excellent, the rigs are simple and since I’ve caught off them before I know they are sound. I’m in clear patches, am not over-baiting, and so it’s just a case of being lucky and watching for signs of the fish.

Sunday morning came along and to be honest this session had just come and gone in a flash. ‘Nothing to report Captain’, no man overboard, no butter on the toast, Tea without milk, and no excitement here thanks! Indeed going off on a tangent for the moment, Mr and Mrs Carpy didn’t leap 10 foot clear of the surface last night and do a rendition of Paul McCartney’s Frog song. The naked women holding 50Ib mirrors last week were in fact 80 year olds without dentures this week doing the ‘can can’ in speedos…hardly a pleasant thought.

As I packed up that Sunday morning I couldn’t help but think maybe a different approach is in order. Maybe all that ‘fishing into the wind’, and ‘your find em on the wind’ stuff would be turned on its head..so….next weekend I have a plan, a very different plan to fish on the back of a warm wind!!!!!! I know!!! I know it’s completely contrary to what every carp publication says but hey, I cannot do any worse than im doing.

So fellow blankers, see you next week for more erm…blanking.       Click Here to visit Geoffs Website
